Making Panels for Blankets using the Figure 8 - Stockinette Stitch

Have you have been looming beanies and feeling excited and confident and ready to try something new ... this post is for you!

I would like to introduce you to the Figure 8 Stitch that we are using to make panels and then stitching them together to make lovely blankets.
(The blanket below has not yet been washed and will lay flat once washed).

LOOMS. You can use any straight loom. Today's post is using the small 26 peg loom. We connect three of these panels together to make a crib blanket for the NICU.

You can also use the largest loom 62 pegs and that will make one solid piece. The 50 peg loom can be used HOWEVER we are finding they come off the loom a little smaller in width than we like and they would need a border added to them which is a little extra work so please if you have 62 peg loom use it.

YARN.  You will need 2 balls of acrylic yarn. We have been using the Himalaya Super Soft yarn as it is a great "bang for your buck" yarn at only 1.400 rial per skein and you get 200g or 328 mtrs / 359yards of yarn!

DIMENSIONS.  For a baby blanket we knit until we get 65cm in length. Don't count rows because everyone has different tensions and you may be using different yarns so instead keep your tape measure handy when your work has reached 64cm in length then stop and cast off.
It is important to leave a nice long tail on BOTH ends of your work. This allows us to join them neatly and weave in the ends so we don't have any large bulky knots.

Here are the video tutorials we have used for the cast on, the stitch and the cast off.  ALL our videos are on our You Tube Channel.

THE FIGURE 8 STITCH
**** START at 3 mins (as we have already cast on using the technique above which gives a nicer tighter end) ****

This stitch makes a lovely scarf too. I made one for my brother for Christmas when he was heading off on a frosty European winter holiday.
